Documenting a good cause
When it's May in Minnesota, it's time for grilling, graduations, and getting outdoors to walk for the cure! A cure for what you ask? For Thalassemia or Cooley's Anemia. Thalassemia is a class of genetic blood disorders, most of which require regular blood transfusions and aggressive management of chronic iron overload, the predominant cause of early death.
My good friend Jay has had this disorder his entire life and for the last 5 years he has organized an annual walk to raise funds and awareness. This year he asked me to take a couple pictures to mark the occasion. The participants gathered in Burnsville, Minnesota for lunch followed by a walk around Sunset Pond Lake. This year's walk honored the memories of Tierra Fant and Zayna Connolly, two individuals who passed after having just met at the 2014 Cooley's Anemia Foundation Patient and Family Conference in Chicago.
We arrived with our kids in tow between rainstorms and we were all lucky enough to get the food and fun in before thunderstorms rolled in. Enjoy a few photos I captured of the day below.
Jay and his team co-captains are still accepting donations! If you feel so inclined and want to contribute to the Cooley's Anemia Foundation, please donate.
