Samba in the Twin Cities
Last week, Arts Midwest welcomed brazilian musicians Paulo Padilha and Group to the Twin Cities for their Arts Midwest World Fest tour. Arts Midwest World Fest brings high-caliber, accessible global artists to small- and mid-sized Midwest communities to provide a multifaceted experience to community residents.
Paulo and his bandmates practically samba'd (is that a word?) off the plane to their first workshop at North High School in St. Paul. Friday was homecoming day and the students were already pretty psyched when they filed into the auditorium for the hour-long concert. As they took their seats, the world percussion class opened for Paulo sporting flashy garb.
In between songs, Paulo took care to explain the lyrics, samba rhythms, and give students the opportunity to play and dance with the music.
The next day, Paulo and crew played a phenomenal 90 minute set at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis complete with a surprise cover of Prince's Kiss! Class act.
